Ulster Senior Soccer Final
Carndonagh Community School Vs Loreto Milford
(Match report - Matthew Cavanagh, 5B)
Twelve months on from a devastating Ulster Final defeat at the hands of Deele College, CCS rose from the ashes to claim a well-deserved victory over Loreto Milford in this year’s showpiece by two goals to one. In truth the gap should’ve been much greater as CCS showed far more desire and spirit than their opponents. The tone was set in the opening minute with Sam Todd skewing wide with a snap-shot following a corner. Wave after wave of CCS attacks followed with Milford goalkeeper Shane Graham keeping Brandon Browne and Cathal Farren at bay. Milford had excellent pace on the counter however and this told when Adrian Delap was upended in the box. The referee pointed straight to the spot and Connor Gormley put Milford into the lead, completely against the run of play. Half-Time CCS 0-1 Loreto Milford.
CCS came racing out of the blocks and within 30 seconds thought they had levelled through Keelan Doherty. The celebrations were short lived however as the linesman on the far side flagged for an offside in the build-up. CCS now had wind in their sails and the pressure grew too much for Milford as full-back Paddy Carr fouled Christopher McLaughlin to concede the games second penalty. Cathal Farren converted with consummate ease to level the scores. The introduction of Declan McLaughlin swung the game in CCS’s favour and it was McLaughlin himself who laid the ball off for Farren to fire home what turned out to be the winner. CCS survived a late Milford surge with James McKinney clearing a Gormley header off the line. A late break saw Declan McLaughlin have a top corner bound shot clawed away by Graham. The referee blew the final whistle soon afterwards and CCS were crowned U19 Ulster champions for the first time in 6 years. The team now face the Leinster champions on the 23rd February in the National Semi-Final and will hope to bring this vein of form even further. Full-Time CCS 2-1 Milford.
