Students from Carndonagh Community School are celebrating their success at the Trash ‘n’ Fashion competition which was held in Letterkenny in May. Trash ‘n’ Fashion is a competition open to all second level students to recycle and reuse old trash into wearable art. Speaking after the final, Miss Michelle McGee said "We are absolutely delighted to have won the overall completion, and also to win in 3 of the 5 categories."
The students designed and made all their outfits and head pieces in their own time, using rubbish and bits of old clothes no longer in use. Carndonagh Community School promotes sustainability and respect for the environment and as such was excited to participate in a competition that has a similar ethos to the school. Deirdre Brennan and Emma Crossan won the Accessorise prize for their creation ‘Crochet Me Up’, which was a hand crochet poncho made from plastic bags. Alisha McDaid and Lisa McLaughlin won the Up Cycling category for their design Orbit, which was hand painted upcycled jeans. The overall prize was won by Caoimhe M Doherty, Caoimhe Doherty and Jade Doherty who created an outfit made with seat belts from old cars. The competition which is sponsored by Donegal County Council commented on how this design complimented the current Road Safety Campaign to encourage people to wear a seat belt.
Miss McGee said "We are delighted to have achieved such success at the Trash ‘n’ Fashion awards; it is an excellent opportunity for the students to express their creativity and gain valuable experience in fashion design. This has been a great year for the Art Department in Carndonagh Community School following on from the Junk Koture Regional Finals where three of our students' creations were selected for the Grand Final and a further fourth design was chosen by the judges as a wild card entry to the final. Competitions like these are an opportunity for us as a school to show our commitment and dedication to art and design, by providing the students with a platform to showcase their creatively and talents."
