Martin Maloney a.k.a. The Birdman had two parts to his presentation in the Aras on Thursday, 4th February. Firstly, a slideshow and video presentation to our TY pupils on birds of prey. He highlighted the need for young people to change the perception of birds of prey, e.g. that they don't eat living lambs and they do eat pest species such as rats and mice. Of course, birds of prey are scavengers and will also eat dead animals.
Secondly, he took out three of his own birds - Rambo the buzzard, Leo the long eared owl and Barny the barn owl. Martin is a professional Ornithologist who has been a leading member of Ireland's Raptor Study Group for the past decade (Raptors is another term for birds of prey). The main part of his work at the moment is education in schools throughout Ireland north and south. In addition, he is no stranger to RTE and BBC and will be on Colin Stafford's Living the Wildlife on RTE One TV in April. Martin is also a leading light throughout Ireland and Britain for rehabilitating and reintroducing birds of prey into the wild.
