U17 Girls Soccer - Defence Wins the Day Against Crana

Match Report by Melanie McGoldrick and Cadla O'Donnell.

The CCS girls started the game strongly. The midfield quartet of Alannah McLaughlin, Leona Duffy, Jamie Lee Collins and Niamh Lafferty caused early problems for Crana with industrious running and clever passing. CCS were first to show when the adaptable centre-back Alannah Curran delivered an expertly measured ball in the Crana danger area, only for some excellent last ditch defending to clear the danger. Crana had their chances too. Solid defensive play from Rachel Doherty, Aoife Doherty, Alannah Curran and Aine Mc Laughlin, coupled with secure handling ability from Imogen McCallion kept this contest on a knife edge.

CCS opened the scoring 20 minutes in when Maeve Doherty was fouled 30 yards from goal. Centre-back Alannah Curran stepped up and rifled a thunderbolt of a shot in off the crossbar to give CCS a first half lead 1-0. Crana pushed for an equaliser in the second half; a quick break resulted in a 1v1 situation, but Alannah dealt with the threat and cleared when Crana were favoured. The game was evenly balanced. A quick break from Jamie Lee released Orla but her shot was well saved by the excellent Crana keeper. Crana pushed again but a well-organised defence kept them to long range efforts that Imogen was comfortable with. CCS had a purple patch in the last 10 minutes as Holly Fallon, Maeve and Orla caused many problems for the Crana defence. However, the Crana girls held firm. The final whistle blew and the CCS girls rejoiced as they move on to the next stage of the competition.
